Panama
Panama had one of the world’s worst education systems for years. The education system is still facing many problems. The percentage of Children Out-of-School is very alarming in Panama. In rural areas, about half the number of children do not attend school at any level. Children lack interest in school. The high dropouts of children are due to teenage pregnancy, poor transportation in rural areas and poverty.
Specifically, the high adolescent pregnancy has affected the girls. In addition, the strikes of teachers are also a problem for a sustainable education system for children. During the pandemic, the schools of Panama remained closed for most of the days. A fluctuation can be seen in the enrollment of lower secondary school children.
Considering the worsened education conditions of Panama, UNICEF and Mona Foundation are trying to uplift the quality of education for the children. The government of Panama has also raised the education budget in the past years for better educational progress. Apart from it, Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) gave an amount of 15 million dollars to the Panama government to advance Early Childhood Education. The fund will be used for teachers’ support and training, digital transformation, increasing educational resources, etc. Also, the UN Millennium Development Goals are a significant objective of the Panama government.
Additionally, NOGs like Ciudad del Saber, Global Partnership for Education, and Global living are improving children’s education.
