Mexico

Mexico has been the victim of poor quality education for a long time. The number of Out-of-School Children in Mexico is increasing day by day. Specifically, children have been affected by the poor education system, limited educational institutions, and the COVID-19 pandemic. The dropout rate of children in Mexico has been at an increased pace.

According to the Interior Department, 5.2 million children dropped out of schools during 2020-21 due to pandemic and lack of resources. The reasons for dropouts are parents’ low confidence in online enrollment, distraction, and lack of interest. In primary schools, the abandonment rate is 1.1%. In comparison, secondary and preparatory schools are vulnerable to 5.3% and 15.2% dropout rates. There is a significant number of Out Of School Children (OOSC) in low-income populations and are vulnerable to anxiety, stress, and pressure of homework.

Mexico’s cost of keeping kids out of school

The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador redesigned the educational reforms. The government aims to establish equal educational opportunities for the urban and rural areas. The wave of digitalization is progressing to meet the national educational requirements. Furthermore, according to United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, Mexico is trying to fulfill the goal of extensive provision of education.

Several NGOs are working in Mexico for the educational betterment of the children including Save the Children and Go Overseas. There is hope for educational improvements for the children in the country.
