Belize

The education sector of Belize needs cautious attention and financial help. Primary schools enrollment has been progressing. Children Out-of-School were 69,000 students in primary schools in 2020, compared to 221,000 children in 2019. However, there is a lot more to do.

Despite the improvement, there are many hurdles for the Belize education system. The situation is even worse for secondary schooling. According to the MICS5 Report, Only 63% of the girls and 57% of the boys were enrolled in secondary schools in 2017. The main reasons for dropout rates and absenteeism are lack of funds, inexperienced teachers, disordered management, and teenage pregnancy.

In connection, UNICEF has been working on the Early Childhood Development (ECD) project to nourish the children and their families at the earliest. The Belize Government has established the education strategy in the form of Policy, Planning, and Research, Evaluation Unit for the betterment of primary and secondary education. Furthermore, several NOGs are continuously working for the educational upliftment of students in Belize. In this regard, the Ministry of Education and Education-based NGOs are collaborating with each other.

Two key NGOs working in Belize are Toucan Ridge Ecology and Education Society (T.R.E.E.S), and Plenty Belize
