Nicaragua
Nicaragua has a poor educational system. Specifically, children’s education is in dire condition.
According to UNICEF, around 500,000 children remain out of school, aged between 3 and 17. Furthermore, the dropout rate in the schools of Nicaragua is also high. The main reasons behind the Children Out-of-School are child labor, health issues, child violence, and poverty. Approximately 250,000-320,000 children are working in the labour force. Out-of-School Children in primary and secondary schools are significant. Education for All (EFA) estimates that one out of six children in low-income families does not complete their primary education. (Education in Nicaragua)
The figure above shows the percentage of OOSC in primary schools from 1995 to 2010.
Several organizations are working for the evolution of the Nicaraguan educational system. In this regard, World Bank provided a 7 million US dollars grant, 2020-22, for educational betterment. Furthermore, UNICEF office Nicaragua got an amount of 70,000 US dollars for strengthening the Ministry of Education against COVID-19.
Apart from the funds, the Nicaragua government is working for improvements in the educational sector for children:
- Increasing the primary school attendance
- Empowering educational institutions
- Reducing illiteracy
- Sector management for quality education
- Sustainable performance of the schools for children’s education
Global Partnership for Education, Nicaragua Nonprofit Network, Nicaragua Education Foundation, and We Villages are some NGOs working in Nicaragua for children’s education.
